I’m thrilled to introduce Modern Fields, a new plugin for creating custom fields that leverage WordPress’s native field components, for a seamless integration with the editor.
Reinventing the custom fields experience
A few months ago, while updating my ACF course, I noticed that despite the UI overhaul of field groups in v6, the fields themselves hadn’t evolved visually.
Which is a shame, because more and more freelancers and agencies are now working with the block editor.
The more I thought about it, the more I felt ACF was becoming less and less suited to modern WordPress: creating fields is tedious, not visual, and the fields don’t look at home alongside the editor’s native components.
That’s when I started imagining what additional fields could look like in a modern WordPress site!
The editor already ships with a solid number of fields natively — so I reused them to keep a consistent interface throughout the WordPress admin.
You can try Modern Fields right now, on your website or directly on this website without installation.
And I’d love to get your feedback too, so feel free to reach me anytime.
Who created Modern Fields?
Hi, I’m Max, web developer and WordPress educator since 2009. I’m primarily active in the French community. I organized WordCamp Lyon 2022, spoke at several WordCamps, and volunteered at WordCamp Europe.

I started my career in 2008 by creating a web agency called Smoothie Creative, specialized in WordPress sites and web apps.
In 2015, I co-founded WP Chef with friends of the community, a training platform to learn WordPress without coding.
In 2017 I launched Capitaine WP, the french reference to learn WordPress as a developer. I’ve been coaching agencies ever since, helping them improve their productivity with Full Site Editing.
And now, I’m back to my first love : coding! As an ACF user since 2011, I always dreamed of making a significant plugin someday.
I grew tired of setting up custom fields with no visual interface and working with fields that don’t fit the block editor. So I decided to make Modern Fields.
Teaching WordPress to hundreds of developers and agencies for over 15 years taught me one thing: the tools we rely on haven’t kept up. Modern Fields is my attempt to fix that.
Hope you’ll love Modern Fields as much as I loved creating it from scratch!
Will there be a Pro version?
Yes, I’m planning to release a premium version over the next few months (summer 20206), packed with powerful features.
Conditional logic, relation and repeater fields, and options pages will obviously be included. I also plan to add a block that lets you display any field value directly in your templates — no coding required.
On top of that, I want to provide a simple way to filter your Query Loop blocks using your custom field values.
